About the Designer & Us
For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with the patterns of nature, particularly the flow of fluids. I am a flyer, kayaker, a naturalist and a plant collector, and I am always thrilled to see, feel and experience the beautiful patterns in the natural world. Wind creates the movement of clouds and movement of leaves and branches in trees. Water ripples and flows down streams down the river, it then creates marvelous waves in lakes and oceans. Rocks and soils reflect geological forces of nature and its movement over the eons.I was first trained & educated as a Japanese style landscaper / gardener and as a designer, Zen Japanese landscape and garden design is my cultural design influence as a designer, with the background of these trainings and many years of experience, I've evolved into a sculptural landscape designer. I have a trademark, "Water and Stone Design™", these two elements are the cornerstone of what I design and create; they are my media, my inner reflections of natures natural beauty, it's strength, it's weakness it's many sensibilities and most of all it's vulnerabilities which reminds us of our own self being, our never ending commitment of responsibilities to preserve the world that we have been given.
I want my work to be as appreciative as one with nature, nature not being subordinated, rather that we are part of nature. Stone and rocks can be selected and manipulated to mirror nature, yet have distinctive design and reflections. Boulders express mass and strength, each is unique with powerful statements. From cobble, to pebble, to sand, to stone it has an incredible variety of textures, size, color and feel. Stones can be stacked or mounded to create greater shapes than just a rock, for example, a pillar or wall. Sometimes I use the stone to create mosaic patterns, sometimes into permanent waves as though flowing like water. Most of the stone is used in its natural state, but sometimes it needs to be cut or modified to fit my vision.
Many of my works include water, others allude to it but my water and stone designs are an expression of myself and my feelings of being one with nature. Each natural element is carefully selected and positioned to interact well with the other elements in the design work. The completed design is three dimensional and can be seen and felt from many angles. It flows with the visual perspective of the viewer as well as the emotional impact it delivers.
Many of our custom landscape projects has been published and awarded in national magazines, landscape & garden tournaments, garden books, newspapers, and TV programs, including Architectural Digest San Diego Union Tribune,The Press Enterprise, Feng Shui at Home, San Diego, Home/Garden Magazine "Gardens of The Year", and KUSI (channel9).
